princess night out

A few weekends ago, I had the privelege of escorting Princess Gabriella to a "ball". :) It was at a local community program that offered this free night for girls ages 3-6. Gabi was a good sport and dressed up in one of her outfits (she can be very stubborn at times, especially when it comes to wearing a skirt/dress - Sunday's used to cut it for that type of clothing, but she went through a phase where it was a fight to do that - but I've corrected that, thankfully!)... and she participated if I was close at hand.
At first the girls played some games in the gym - Gabi was a bit young to do that on her own, but would have joined in more willingly if either of her brothers were also there to participate. Then we went into a separate room - where Princess Aurora suprised us with a visit! It was soooo cool! She was a great actress - she danced and treated the girls sooo special - she sang a song for the girls and read them Cinderella and then she met each one separately and sprinkled them each with pixie dust:Princess Aurora asked the girls a question, now I have to remember what it was - something along the lines of "how do you know you are a princess in your heart, not by the mirror, but in your heart?" and these little girls said things like "b/c Jesus is in my heart", "God is in my heart" - it was soooo cute and could be a great little testimony to this Princess!making a crown (Gabi's fine motor skills are fine at work here - she is quite advanced from my experience thus far)What a fabulous time! My Princess and I.
Gabi will be starting ballet at this same community school this weekend - should be interesting!

be still and know

At the beginning of October we went on a Church Retreat (remember we sold donuts for this event in the Spring?) - it was a fabulous weekend and filled with lots of warm sun! Jason and the boys brought up their bikes and used them quite a bit all weekend. I kicked myself for not grabbing my camera since this weekend would have allowed for some nice photos to be taken in the dry leaves...cute turkey, hey? this was a make/take session we could join if we wanted, so Gabi and I did:pinecone creations was another session available for kidsand while Elijah and Jason were on a lengthly hike, Sam participated in relays, which he just loved doing!Food was aplenty there - seemed we were always eating some sort of huge meal... it's really great and beautiful up there!

September Seventh

Also known as the "first day of school" around our parts... it was a good morning and everyone is psyched! Elijah started grade 2. Samuel and Gabriella were both starting their Music Class that morning so they were excited and thinking it was time to go too and even packed a snack to have while the other was in their class...
It's hard to believe Elijah is in Grade 2 already - wow. This was the first year I didn't cry or even tear up letting him go into the School Year!
Samuel is excited to get back to his second year of Orff Music - ready with his Binder and playing the Tick Tock Block
And Gabi started her first year in Orff. I knew it might be sketchy as whether or not she'd stay on her own, though mentally she was very prepared. And yes, as it was I wasn't able to leave her so Sam joined Gabi's class since he of course, was with me with no where to go...Erin is in Gabi's class too, but that didn't make a difference for herWhen the second class came (they each go 1/week for 50min.) Gabi was going to be brave (all in her head again) - but in reality started to freak out when it was time to go in... I knew she was capable, so I had to say 'you're going in or else' and she did... now she's been to about 5 classes and she is so brave and wants me to go home during the class not just for a walk with Sam. Very cute. And I am thankful!

spawning Salmon and more

We made our annual trip to Vernon on Labour Day Weekend (by now we are passed Thanksgiving, but I had already started this post so I may as well finish it). We had a great time as usual. First we walked down to greet the horses...this time the "snobby" horses actually came to meet us at the fencethen the kids filled up Gabi's basket with apples that were on the ground under an apple tree - and the kids fed the horsesand here is brave-Katherine riding Beth's electric scooter!Of course we went to DeMills for ice cream and to greet the animals thereand we loved upon the bunny
and drove the Gatorand we had a campfire in what turned out to be a downpour once we got the weiners out to roast!
Then we did something we've never done or seen before - we went to Adams River and saw the salmon making their way back to their stomping ground to spawn/die. There were fish all over this very low river, many dead and many almost dead. There were bright orange eggs all over the bottom of the riverbed... it was amazing, we all loved it! Here is Beth climbing over the log to the other side of the river - in her cowboy boots which made for a bit of a challenge, however very stylish!
if you are interested in seeing the eggs, click the following picture to enlarge and see the orange eggs sprinkled around in the waterJason was able to grab three or four of them - some of them all of a sudden got a spunk of life back in them and jumped free of his hands... it was neat for the kids to "pet a salmon". LOLThis was such a great experience - thanks for the idea of going there R-Family!! :) See you next Labour Day Weekend!

Tunnels

On Saturday, August 28 we met for an "in home" picnic lunch with the T-Family and then headed up to the Othello Tunnels! None of us remembered it being unpaved along the path, so that was a bit hard for some of the kids to ride their bikes on - but we figured it all out and did leave some bikes along the side for us to come back to! Worked out great! At one point Jen T. had 3 kids on the stroller! Here are two of them; Ben and Jessie! It was fun T's!

Kelly

This summer Kelly (one of our girls from China that we hosted a year ago) came back for a 6-week program! Unfortunately due to our travelling in July, we weren't able to host her again though. But we did have Kelly over for a weekend in August and then again for a quick visit the night before she was leaving for Home again! (shown)
That night we I pulled out a chipboard book for everyone to cover with pre-cut patterned papers and some stickers/letters. We also had our Japanese Student with us - Kana - at that time. Kana was with us for 2 weeks at the end of August.
Kelly, it was soooo good to finally have one of our Students return! We pour so much into the lives of these kids and so it was a real treasure to actually see one of these faces return!

make a wish

I just stumbled upon these 5 pictures I had in my picture folder, but hadn't put them in my July Folder - silly me; they are adorable and I have to share... they are compliments of Uncle Matt during his excursion with Gabi to Build-a-Bear...
Picking her bear: Ice Cream Bearwatching it get filled:making a wish for the heart before placing inside:then fluffing up her bear at the air-table (with Sam who brought his BAB along):Way too fun! When do I get my Build-a-Bear date?!

camping missions

In July we had the privelege of going on a Missons Trip "locally" (4 hours away) with our Church. It was a last minute trip that was taken over by our Church for another local Church that normally does this trip every year - they couldn't this year due to conflicting scheduling of another Missions Trip! So we jumped on this opportunity and went along with 16 other adults and 9 other children. We stayed at a Campground and tented for 6 nights. This is the first time we've camped as a Family since Elijah was 18months! It was great! (besides the wind on the first and second days - it was windy like I've never experienced, and unfortunatly I've developed a wind-phobia in the past couple years. Ugh)
Here we are loaded down with all of our gear and food and bikes on the back - ready to go!
So the whole mission for this trip was to LOVE the migrant workers & fruit pickers that come to this area (primarily from Quebec) by providing them with a big dinner for the 5 week days. We were going up to their Camp (which was just basic with a tap for running water that they drank but probably shouldn't have and an toilet - they can stay at this "campground" for $75/month!) with all of our gear (borrowed from the Church who usually does this trip) like tables, chairs, huge BBQ, pots, bowls...etc.there were lots of dogs up at this camp - the kids all loved the dogswe were told to expect about 175 people coming up for meal; but many of the days we were feeding closer to 300! God provided! It was really neat working in a "kitchen" outdoors with the group to prepare salads, cut vegetables, serve food - our Pastor said if he doesn't see another BBQ for the rest of the summer though, he'd be good with that! There was A LOT of que-ing going on!one evening we handed out these little packs of toothpaste, toothbrush deodorant...etc. and then another night we handed out Bibles in French to those who wanted oneall 3 of my children were hard workers - setting up chairs, taking down chairs, picking up trash and recycling and their favourite job was handing out cups and filling them up with Lemonade... check it out:there were 2 of these handy dandy backpacks (that Jason has on) - we would pass out the Lemonade to the people in the line waiting for food, great time to converse with them!At this final meal, we had invited a few of the Workers to serve food with us (in the pink, for example) - and see this Family getting food? They live up at this camp; the husband fruit picks and the wife is with the 2 children. They otherwise live in a nearby town in the off season. Wow, what a brave mother! It is just dirt up there - man our kids came home sooooo dusty/dirty each evening!
Another thing we did for the workers, was provide a Laundry Day for them! We handed out garbage bags one night and said to return them to us full of dirty laundry and we would then return them nice and clean! One morning the Ladies (and one husband - the one whom had the back of his truck full of the bags!) got up early to do Laundry at a Laundromat that specifically let us in 2 hours before he opened the store to regualar customers. That meant 7:00am. It was another neat experience! And yet another component to this week was the opportunity to work at Gleaners. 4 of the mornings that week a group of us went to work there, cutting onions!a part of this special Mix sent all over the World:That was the work part of our trip! In the afternoons we met as a group for a meeting and devotional and then had an hour or two to do whatever before heading up to the camp for meal preparations!
One afternoon our whole group met at a local lake - the kids had a blast! It was almost like a week-long-playdate for the kids!and one afternoon our Family drove into the next City to get to a Walmart for a new air mattress since we were waking up a bit to close to the ground each morning - and so we stopped for an ice cream cone at Tickleberry'sand finally, our Campground had a pool, so we took advantage of that!Fantastic week - would we do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat. Am I happy to finally gone on a Missions Trip (never have)? Yes! Even if it was so close to home, I'm happy to have given this opportunity to our Children already as well! (I'm hoping one of my 3 children will want to go on a Missions Trip through their High School (yes, we're taking a decade from now!) and I'll go as a chaperone - that's my plan! I want to get to Haiti yet!)
