Australia - Day 2, part 1
On Wednesday we drove a bunch on their bumpy, skinny, generous speed-limit roads to Wilson's Prom. Through lots of rolling hills and pastures of cows... to this area. It was flooded out back in March 2011, so many parts of the area were closed, but we saw plenty...
Our eyes were peeled for Koalas in trees, Roos crossing the road and anything else that would catch our eye... here was our first find: Echidna who darted into the bush as soon as he caught sight of our car
then we came to this view - breathtaking! At this pullover we talked to a couple from Britain who is travelling AUS for 3 months! Nice!!
and then we could have run over this little guy but didn't and stopped to photograph him -
and a stop at Squeaky Beach - the sand was marbled, so gorgeous!
at our next stop, we went on a loop walk which took us on a beach for half of it. We found these little crabs all over the place and found out that they cause the "brown sugar" looking sprinkles overtop of the sand! Unreal!
So they put a little bit of sand in their mouth, roll it in a ball while pulling out the organisms they need for nutrition... leaving the sand covered in these little balls! Wow!
(wouldn't be a good beach to hang out on - but sure neat to walk past)
A Crimson Rosella from the Parrot Family - we were in a "caravan park" (campground) and these birds were flying around. This one let us get pretty close - so unbelievable to see this in the wild!
a Galah
We stopped at a opening where we were told we might spot some wildlife - sure enough down a path we came to a clearing and there were a number of Emu's
and a Magpie that tried to dive-bomb me twice - freaked me out! (we later learnt when we talked to a local that the kids even carry branches with them on their walk to school this time of year as the Magpies are in mating season and I guess dive-bomb them?! crazy bird...
then we saw our first Kangaroo
we continued on into the country - a lot of the rolling hills gave us the feeling that we were visiting Europe; it was beautiful -
and lots and lots of cows
to be continued...

Australia - Day 1
Wow - I haven't blogged in ages!! Life has gotten so busy I guess, and I just don't make the time for this anymore! As I sit here in Australia on a rainy night - I may as well take advantage of the bit of time I have and free wi-fi in our room to try to complete one post.
In September Jason was invited to come to Australia by one of his Vendors - paid trip - of course he couldn't say no! So we worked it out that we would go a week early so that I could join him for a week of sightseeing - and this all came to fruition a week ago!
We flew out from Vancouver on Saturday November 19th to San Fransisco on a little puddle jumper of a plane. This plane was not allowed to land in San Fran until the weather cleared - we circled and circled and ended up going East to Sacramento to land to re-fuel as they said the airport was closed! What a lie. What was a supposed to be a 1hour40min flight turned out to be 4 hours on the plane! Wow. We missed our connecting flight to Sydney because of all of this. We didn't get stressed just tired and annoyed at the lies. The Airline gave us a voucher for a deal for a neighbouring hotel - which we took advantage of. So by 2:00am we got to our Best Western and had ourselves a good sleep. United only flies at 10:39pm daily to Sydney, so we had a full 24hour delay. The next morning we had our free big breakfast at the hotel and took our time checking out. We took advance of the free shuttle to the airport and brought our luggage to get it checked and out of the way. We spent the afternoon in the airport looking around, people-watching, using free wi-fi and relaxing... finally flying out at 10:39pm.
We thought we'd get right to sleep shortly after take-off, but they fed us dinner! At 11:00pm! Weird, but maybe that's their attempt at getting us on AUS time. We ate our meal and watched Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts) - well, we both fell asleep before it ended which is too bad! We now want to see how it ends. So we slept for a good length of the trip! We were pleasantly surprised to look at the clock a good 8-9 hours into our 14hr flight! Not so bad after all!
Arriving in Sydney and then flying to Melbourne - by now Tuesday, Nov 22nd Australia time. We grabbed our little rental car and started on our adventure - which was interesting right off the bat with Jason driving the right-hand drive and a manual-speed!!! Ahhh! He's so capable though and does amazing!
driving on this side seems soooo wrong and takes a lot of concentration of where we were driving and turning!
See Costco?!
Jason had booked us 3 nights in Frankston, Victora, AUS - so we made our way that way stopping first at an Information Building and then exploring the first part of the peninsula - here is Mornington Beach...

We ended the day by driving to Peninsula Hot Springs for a discounted dip in their 20 mineral pools - so relaxing! The only time we've worn our suits all week - didn't really realize the water here is colder than Vancouver's beaches! At least the weather has been sunny and warm enough with the wind.

Ocean Odyssey ~ Pacific Whale Foundation
We are being spoiled this whole trip - thanks Dad and Mom!!! Yesterday (Wed, Nov 17) we were treated to a day on the water aboard a Pacific Whaler boat... we went across to Molokini and then to Lanai. Both specatacular!! We first came across about 20 Bottle-nosed Dolphins that greeted us at our boat and swam around us for a bit for us to take them all in - it was as if they were trained to do that!! We snorkelled in Molokini Crater - the kids got to put on life jackets; Sam used goggles and a snorkel and Elijah used a boogy-board with a window to see down into the clear deep water. Gabi swam along (not literally) with us. Even Grandma got out into the water also on a window-boogy board!! Yea! It was fantastic -- until little Miss Hyper Gabi took a spill on the deck and whacked her head into the iron side which immediately drew blood from the good sized gash! Thankfully since we weren't due back for over 3 hours, a "sister boat" was right near us where she took her fall and so they quickly arranged for her and Jason to board onto that boat and head back into Town to visit a Clinic. Jason and Gabi had to get onto this little kayak and get pulled into the other boat (shown)...
So - as all of this was happening with Gabi - about 200 Spinner Dolphins were circling and playing around the boat!!! I managed to get some shots of them and enjoy the awe of these wild creatures...

Wednesday ~ added that one photo
Wish I had time to sit and blog all day - LOL - oh, then I wouldn't have pictures to share with you later on now would I?! Ok - so forget blogging and I'll keep enjoying paradise!!!
We are keeping pretty busy... yesterday we took a full day trip "on the road to Hana" - with stops every 10minutes if we wanted... that 50mile stretch of road with 600 switchbacks and 54 one-lane-bridges took from 8:30-5:00!!! (b/c of the stops as well as the info I just mentioned)... then another 2 hours back home!! Crazy.
But we saw amazing sites on the other side of Maui - like this Black Sand Beach - A~Mazing!

flying
**this post is now complete and in order! Thanks Alexa for pointing out how to "right-click", now why couldn't I have figured it out?!
Hello Friends! I know there are some of you who are waiting for some updates here - this is the first I've gotten on wi-fi, and the connection is really slow... so it may have to be half-hearted posts to start.
Yesterday we flew to Maui on Hawaiian Airlines...where they get you in the Island mood as soon as you walk onto the aircraft with the wafting sounds of Hawaii playing on the speakers - ambiance! Here are Matt and Carla checking out our plane
and Grandma and Sam above that photo... on the flight
What would we do without all these electronics?!

and arriving in Maui!!!

camping missions
In July we had the privelege of going on a Missons Trip "locally" (4 hours away) with our Church. It was a last minute trip that was taken over by our Church for another local Church that normally does this trip every year - they couldn't this year due to conflicting scheduling of another Missions Trip! So we jumped on this opportunity and went along with 16 other adults and 9 other children. We stayed at a Campground and tented for 6 nights. This is the first time we've camped as a Family since Elijah was 18months! It was great! (besides the wind on the first and second days - it was windy like I've never experienced, and unfortunatly I've developed a wind-phobia in the past couple years. Ugh)
Here we are loaded down with all of our gear and food and bikes on the back - ready to go!
So the whole mission for this trip was to LOVE the migrant workers & fruit pickers that come to this area (primarily from Quebec) by providing them with a big dinner for the 5 week days. We were going up to their Camp (which was just basic with a tap for running water that they drank but probably shouldn't have and an toilet - they can stay at this "campground" for $75/month!) with all of our gear (borrowed from the Church who usually does this trip) like tables, chairs, huge BBQ, pots, bowls...etc.
there were lots of dogs up at this camp - the kids all loved the dogs
we were told to expect about 175 people coming up for meal; but many of the days we were feeding closer to 300! God provided! It was really neat working in a "kitchen" outdoors with the group to prepare salads, cut vegetables, serve food - our Pastor said if he doesn't see another BBQ for the rest of the summer though, he'd be good with that! There was A LOT of que-ing going on!
one evening we handed out these little packs of toothpaste, toothbrush deodorant...etc. and then another night we handed out Bibles in French to those who wanted one
all 3 of my children were hard workers - setting up chairs, taking down chairs, picking up trash and recycling and their favourite job was handing out cups and filling them up with Lemonade... check it out:
there were 2 of these handy dandy backpacks (that Jason has on) - we would pass out the Lemonade to the people in the line waiting for food, great time to converse with them!
At this final meal, we had invited a few of the Workers to serve food with us (in the pink, for example) - and see this Family getting food? They live up at this camp; the husband fruit picks and the wife is with the 2 children. They otherwise live in a nearby town in the off season. Wow, what a brave mother! It is just dirt up there - man our kids came home sooooo dusty/dirty each evening!
Another thing we did for the workers, was provide a Laundry Day for them! We handed out garbage bags one night and said to return them to us full of dirty laundry and we would then return them nice and clean! One morning the Ladies (and one husband - the one whom had the back of his truck full of the bags!) got up early to do Laundry at a Laundromat that specifically let us in 2 hours before he opened the store to regualar customers. That meant 7:00am. It was another neat experience!
And yet another component to this week was the opportunity to work at Gleaners. 4 of the mornings that week a group of us went to work there, cutting onions!
a part of this special Mix sent all over the World:
That was the work part of our trip! In the afternoons we met as a group for a meeting and devotional and then had an hour or two to do whatever before heading up to the camp for meal preparations!
One afternoon our whole group met at a local lake - the kids had a blast! It was almost like a week-long-playdate for the kids!
and one afternoon our Family drove into the next City to get to a Walmart for a new air mattress since we were waking up a bit to close to the ground each morning - and so we stopped for an ice cream cone at Tickleberry's
and finally, our Campground had a pool, so we took advantage of that!
Fantastic week - would we do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat. Am I happy to finally gone on a Missions Trip (never have)? Yes! Even if it was so close to home, I'm happy to have given this opportunity to our Children already as well! (I'm hoping one of my 3 children will want to go on a Missions Trip through their High School (yes, we're taking a decade from now!) and I'll go as a chaperone - that's my plan! I want to get to Haiti yet!)
